The best ones are freeware that work great and you don't have to pay for like AVG AntiVirus available from download.com

But the most important freeware you need is Zone Alarm's software firewall.

Finally download the following freeware from Site Advisor Inc which automatically tells you the bad websites to stay away from that are infecting your computer.

I think that AVG Gristof is the best on the market, because even the free version works better than most store bought

For virus protection, you can use free ones such as AVG from www.grisoft.com which works great and Windows Defender for spyware.
One of the best combination packages I've seen thus far is Trend Micro's PCcillian. The security suite is about $50 and it contains virus protection, a firewall, pop-up blocker, and a spy/adware stopper. Its a great overall package for the cost. However, if you are on a limited budget, try downloading AVG, Zone Alarm, Adaware, and Spybot Search %26 Destroy
