no such thing as a good all-in-one, the best adware/spyware removing software is free, ad-aware (www.lavasoft.de) and spybot search %26 destroy (www.spybot.info). I would probably just use the firewall built into windows because that's perfectly sufficient for home users, and as far as an antivirus i would probably go with clamav for a free one (www.clamav.net) or if you want to pay for one i would probably recommend norton, but it's quite a resource hog, mcaffee had gone down hill after they were bought out by network associates a few years ago, but that's another option.

You should use Norton Antivirus it's the BEST!

If you're running win XP or newer you have a firewall turned on by defalt. Do not use it do not trust it. Go out and buy Nortons Firewall (all listed on the url I gave) DO NOT USE Zonealarm Firewall it's a peace of JUNK that does not work and it does not keep out hackers.

If you're going to alot of photography sites then most like you DON'T have Virus on you're PC you have spyware. Programs Nortons will help to some live delete thoes programs but will not delete all of them. Do a yahoo search on spyware and it will bring up alot of spyware Remover programs most of wich are free.

Spybot Search and Destroy (S%26D) is a good program to use to speed up you're PC. From safer-networking it's the last url I listed.

When norton had their update for 2005- security level was set hig- check internet security settings and lower it down. It's not actually allowing outlook express to connect to the internet.

got it. the firewall is preventing you from sending and recieving.

1. open the norton console (click on tray icon) and click on the personal firewall. Then click on the configure button.

2. on the window that pops up, click on the tab that says programs. There will be a list of all the programs that require approval from the firewall to access the internet. scroll through the list and find outlook and highlight it. then at the bottom click on the modify button. on the window that pops up make sure the selection is set to automatically configure internet access (recommended).

this should remedy the problem, but if it doesn't then there are 2 more things to try. you could disable nortons firewall (if you have windows xp sp2, you can turn on windows built in firewall). If that doesn't work the go with a uninstall/reinstall of the app.

Trouble removing Norton Antivirus and installing McaFee...?

I got my computer in late 2003 and installed NAV 2004 (actually the geeksquad did). Now since my internet provider provides free McaFee software I went to install it but could not since i still had norton, or so it claimed. I had long ago uninstalled 2004 and still have the disk but on the add/remove programs list it says 2003 and also norton wmi update. The 2003 only has a change option and i cannot remove the update. I get an error saying the network source isn't available and stuff about an alternate path. I really want to get this off and get McaFee on and the only thing I know is that there is three norton folders in the "my computer" section and also a symantec folder. I have Windows XP SP1 by the way. Any help is greatly appreciated and if more information is need just ask. Thanks.

I would go to the Symantec Website and download the Norton Removal Tool. Use this to remove norton completely, before trying to install another antivirus program. Sadly to say you are probably going to have the same problem removing McAfee as well. There are much better free antiviruses out here. Try AVG, Avast, or Antivir. You won't be disappointed. iam using symantec anti virus software. the scan history shows several scanning process going on. i was told to unload service so that whatever process is going on, it will stop.but the reply i got was scanning going on so cannot unload service.

so i tried to uninstall the software and install it again. but there was some error and then from the add or remove program the software disappeared. but its still in the program files list.

Symantec are supposed to have a program on their site for completely un-installing their product. I suggest you downlaod this,runit and get rid of every scrap of the it and then think real hard as to whether you want to put it back on your machine.

Once you have got rid of it, go to one of the online virus scanners and have your machine cleaned of any nasties.

If it came with your machine I'd ditch it. If you had the misfortune to pay good money for it I'd troll their websites and forums before putting it back on.

i almost never recommend that people use norton. that's because to get it to work properly you have to read what it says on their support site. most people are too lazy or busy to do that.

AVG should work on Win 98 machine as well as Win XP. Not sure what your problem is but your AVG installation maybe corrupted. You should uninstall AVG and reinstall it again to see if the problem goes away. If not try this free antivirus below, it works much better than avg or avast

I just bought Trend Micro's PC-cillin Internet Security software. And there is a place where it quarantines infected files. There is an option to delete them. Quarantined files are usually infected with some kind of virus or other bad thing. They are placed into a special holding area called quarantine. While in quarantine, they are not deleted, but they are also not able to be opened or run so that they cannot spread whatever nastiness they have to the rest of your system. If you cannot clean a file that is in quarantine, the best bet is to delete it. Its also a backup, I mean that if you have accidenly delete a file, you can always return the file to normal

antivirus programs are the mainstay these days as there are still "baddies" out there who write malicious code for whatever reason...as far as the specific programs go, some work better in certain regions than others, it has to do with the definition files...Norton is a system hog, but its centrally made for the americas and therefore may not have the correct definitions for the india virus database....mcafee is the same way...grisoft (avg) is a german company and has more definitions because of its international database, not to say norton and mcafee don't, they just aren't as diverse as some others. So your Quick heal program is probably setup more for your region than others and thats why it works better for you.
I would recommend Norton Antivirus with Antispyware and also Spysubract, but at least Norton.

To be honest trojans virus is a very strong viruse giving by hackers the best way to remove it is to recover your system I am prettey sure about it even if you use Northon or any otherr anti viruse program.

You recover your system if you your recovery system CD or DVD from your computer companey.

AVG is a great free anti-virus program. It is far less intrusive on your system than the programs from the big companies and quite efficient - though there is no figures to say if it is any more total in its work.

Every anti-virus program can be beaten by the arrival of a new virus until it has been detected, reported and included in the database updates. AVG give regular updates so your risk is minimal.

I have found that some of the bigger programs can get so aggressive on your system that it slows down internet access to a crawl. One client of mine insisted that I installed an expensive anti-virus package (naming no names) and, a week later, asked me to remove it because it made his machine unusable. AVG replaced it and he was hardly aware that it was there.

One thing I do recommend with using AVG - do a reboot immediately after installing new software so that it forces a scan upon it.

Well, don't run two anti-virus programs at the same time.

If you have Norton and AVG, get rid of one of them. It's just a bad idea.

I also recommend getting a spyware/adware sweeper. If your Norton product has that, fine.

If not, then try Spybot - Search and Destroy. It's decent, and free.

If you already paid for Norton, then keep that at least until the contract is up. No point in throwing it away. But if it is a trial version, and you don't want to pay $30-$60, go free.

There honestly isn't a "best". I have researched this quite a bit, and especially on forums consisting of expert users...and nobody has a real consensus as to the best anti-virus software. Just use what is comfortable for you.

Ad aware SE is not for virus protection, it will protect you against spyware/adware.

You can use AVG it's free to use and download. Just make sure you uninstall norton using their online tool.

AdAware SE is not an antivirus software. It is a spyware/adware detector that you manually run every so often. It works really well, though, and it's free. Can't beat that.

AVG Free is an antivirus software. It does not create a constant barrier, but it scans at a time you choose and heals or quarantines viruses.

I have both of these and have never had a problem. Also, there's a great recent online article at http://tech.msn.com/downloads/articlepcw... that has PC World readers' most favorite software for just about anything.

that is the general idea of an antivrus program. I use Norton's on both my pc's along with Zone Alarm Pro firewall and antispyware, touch wood, a good combo for me. Firewall and antispyware other essential programs.

I will recommend to make use of the smaller Anti Virus company software. They will provide a better service due to lesser user and more support staff.

Hi, I also had this problem. What I did was, uninstall Norton and then re-install it. The problem was that the first time I installed the disc it hadn't all loaded. After re-installing it I switched on auto update and it's been fine ever since.

If Norton will not remove your prob you can download TROJAN REMOVER from www.simplysup.com and do a scan. The program is free for 30 days. Well worth a try and it will fix everything it finds.
Update the anti-virus, then run a scan in safe mode. (Tap F8 at start up) Then run a scan and remove the spyware with Norton. To get outta safe mode, Start%26gt;Run%26gt;msconfig%26gt;Boot tab%26gt;Uncheck safe mode
When you do a scan go to "fix the problem" and it will do it automatically.
There should be a function within Norton to fix this for you.
I have had this problem norton never got rid of it so I had to do it manualy by going into it they are normaly in documents and settings or program files look to see what the report tells you then you can delete it hope this helps sos don't rate norton at all

This should removed ASAP, however using the Windows Add/Remove Applications application will not work in this case. I don't use Norton... (AVG Free and Avast, with Comodo Personal Firewall)... however are you sure your not using Norton Internet Security Suite and not just Norton Antivirus? Your firewall might be blocking it might want to check it out.

That happens to my dad's computer all the time too! He just has to keep turning it back on. One thing to check, is if the little box next to the time on the bottom of the screen, that has to be red. (sometimes it's black even though everything is protecting, but I don't know whats up with that, but if its black, chick on it and turn whatever is off on)

Ditto to jd. Running more than one Anti Virus on your computer sends conflicting and duplicate messages and actions. It can cause all kinds of havoc and even make your entire PC crash. You only need one and make sure to update it's definitions regularly. But run as many anti spyware/adware programs as you like.

I have the same problem, I visited their website, sent them an email and their reply was useless, certainly wouldn't recommend using mcafee to anyone. Get a pop up everytime i switch on saying it couldn't be installed properly as components missing, and won't let me uninstall it.
either you have deleted the icon from your desktop when u did this u auto deleted the uninstall files also so now u will have to wipe your drive possible to do a partial wipe and keep all your files intact if u have that kind of computer... ie: compaq hp and presario does have this option builtin...lol

You need to go to the MacAffee website and get help from them. You may have the same problem with Norton when its time to ditch that as well, they're both well known for this problem.
You can try downloading a trial mcafee anti-virus and install it, it should overwrite your current mcafee and then reboot and uninstall everything. Or if you have a decent registry cleaner,eg, TuneUp Utilities 2006 (can download for 30 day trial, very useful!), you can shutdown the mcafee anti-virus, delete the mcafee folder, and then reboot and clean up the registry entries.

Mcafee and Norton have gone downhill over the years and I'm not really sure why unless it's just general laziness with quality after leading the pack for so many years. The new leaders on the block seem to be nod32, avg and kaspersky.

And if you want to pay a few extra bucks for the best firewall in the universe, then go with BlackIce. Just do not use McAfee or Norton.
