I doubt there are any viruses that save themselves to flashdrives. Viruses are targeted to your harddrive and windows files. So you don't need an antivirus for your flash drive. (they probably don't even make any)

These are free software. Clamwin has high detection rate, however it does not have onaccess scanner. This means that it will not intercept the file automatically, You have to ask it to scan before you open/copy the file. AVG has on access scanning however the detection rate is not as good as clamwin.

If you have your own favorite scanner, make it a habbit to scan your removable drive before you access it. Also never install Two antivirus packages at once, remove the old one before you try a new one.

You can install Norton, its a pretty good anti-virus, provided you go on having the automatic updates so that the software is always updated with the master server. Run Norton and get their clean bill of health then download and run AVG and prepare to be mortified at the number of Trojans running in the background that Norton that POS missed. They sell a Pro version which has more features, etc although the free version works quite well. It is better than Norton for several reasons. The program itself is not a memory / resource hog like the Norton products. The updates for viruses are released faster / more often. The Grisoft company actually cares about people!!

spybot and adaware are a nice addition. so if you get excessive pop-ups, run these. and i you pc is running slow; runs these programs, update them regularly and you should really not have any problems.......

All you have to do is to open your Norton program and click on "Renew". You will be taken to the website where you will be asked for your credit card. Your subscription to updates will be renewed for 12 months and cost about half the price of buying the new version.

Or you have to go to the shop and buy a new version.

The only bad things about updates is that if you need to re-install Norton because you had to re-format... bought a new hard disk or new computer... you will need to re-download all those updates since you bought the original program. Because of this, I buy the CD every 2 or 3 years.

I had nothing but problems when I used AVG. For an antivirus solution it sure missed a lot of viruses.

It did constantly update itself, ran scheduled and on demand virus scans but ... when it came down to actually finding and stopping a virus all it did was ignore it.

I heard the same one can be used for up to 3 computers, desktop and lap top shouldn't matter at all. There are much better programs out there for free in my opinion though.. such as Avast and Spysweeper... thats what I use.
I bought Norton a couple of years ago and it allowed me to install up to 6 computers. In theory, you can install on more, but it will not allow you to update the virus definitions on any more which is essential these days. The other thing to note is that when your 1 year's subscription runs out, you will need to pay for another years subscription for EACH computer.
I suspect the answer is yes. Check your license agreement, some agreements allow you to install a second copy on a laptop computer.

This is a registry problem, related with Norton Antivirus, the remedy is uninstall and reinstall Norton, this is the solution of 95% of all problems related to software, so I suggest you try it before worrying or taking big decisions like switching Retail paid money protection to free software which is usually bubdled with adware (Adware came with AVG and Avast when I downloaded it).

My personal preference is for Zone Alarm Suite, which provides a firewall, anti virus protection and email protection (checks incoming and outgoing mail) But even in front of that I use MailWasher (www.firetrust.com) which enables me to check all mail while it is still on the server - I can blacklist and bounce all spam and anything that looks dodgy, and when the process mail button is clicked mail that I accept (i.e is put on the Friends list) is sent to Outlok Express which is opened automatically by MaiWasher. you heard right. but that's not their job. for that you need two firewalls. a hardware firewall and two-way software firewall.

even if you never plan to network two computers together you need to get a router lke linksys to put between your computer and the internet. this router has a firewall (known as a hardware firewall) in it to stop stuff from getting on your computers and stops low level hackers using a port scanner app from getting into your system.

then you need a two-way software firewall installed on your hard drive. these take care of stuff that gets on your hard drive when you download stuff or load it in off of cd, dvd, etc. being that it is a two-way it also stops spyware (like free version of real player) from spying on you and reporting the results back to real.com.

Both Norton and McAfee work fine, and they're idiot-proof (Norton berates you if you try to open a suspicious email attachment). The problem with both of them is that they're resource hogs, which causes many people to shut them off. But if you have Vista, the expectation is that you have a powerful computer (or at least let's hope you do, or else Vista is going to beat it senseless), so it won't hurt to leave your Antivirus software on all the time.

I would suggest Norton and a couple additional free programs: Spybot Search %26 Destroy and the free version of Lavasoft Ad-Aware. And it doesn't hurt to use Firefox with adblock and a good spam filter for your email (if your email provider doesn't already use one).

AVG and Avast are both good, and both free. However, AVG is free only for one computer, even at home, and they now have functionality in their product that detects if it is installed on more than 1 computer in the same location. Avast allows unlimited home use - for that reason, I prefer Avast.

If those are the two options I would recommend Mcafee. NAV just isnt what it used to be and it does not catch everything. I switched to Mcafee six months ago and am very happy with it thus far. It found what Norton missed.

Of course, AGV is what I tell people to use becasue it is free, but so was mcafee for me. :)

I just read reports that Symantec is dropping Norton and just recently Mcafee just revealed they have problems with keeping your personal information safe. So to answer neither one. Before the problems Mcafee was the best by far. There are System Suite 6 that is better but the one everyone has been satisfied with is System Mechanic. There are others to choose from but you have to do some internal research of what you want to protect.

I would say AVG, I have AVG free installed and I haven't had one complaint, I also have Norton Anti-virus but I ended up un-installing it as someone else said I had to keep re-installing it and had to keep putting the disc in the drive, I had allot of problems with Norton Anti-virus, yet with AVG Free I have never had one problem and I know for a fact that it stops any threats as AVG has stopped a few viruses from entering my computer and it safely stores them in a virus vault where you can then go to and get rid of the virus for good, AVG is real easy to use, nothing complicated about it, you can set your settings so as it updates every time you turn on your machine or you can set it for a certain time. Buy a 512 stick of RAM. They're about 50 USD for laptop modules or 25-35 USD for desktop modules. It will improve your machine leaps and bounds.

I personally dropped Norton products and switched over to Zone Alarm's Internet Security Suite and I love it.

Not only am I protected from viruses, spyware and other malware, Zone Alarm is a great software firewall.

On top of that, at least at this writing, you can install your program on up to 3 separate computers with 1 license!

Try running windows in safe mode. I had simmilar problems with my firewall, I also coudn't uninstall it and when I tried to do that in safe mode,it worked!

safe mode is pressing the function key "f8" when the computer is booting up and selecting the safe mode entry option.

caution: it is best to let a technician to handle such safe mode solutions unless you are prepared to reinstall your windows system and drivers - you need the cd for the drivers at times - and it may not be easy.

ps: if your windows is winxp, you need your cd key and an internet connection to register your windows again and the registration may not work if certain hardware in your computer has changed over time.
