While there are many programs available "free", the updates are another issue. My suggestion is to spend the money to protect your investment and go with Norton or McAfee. They are tried and proven and the updates are issued regularly. And yes, buy the subscription. Why mess around trying to save a few bucks when one good virus hit can destroy your data and cause you all kinds of stress. Stick with the simple anti-virus offerings from these companies if you don't care for the bundled "system" utilities that just duplicate OEM software usually anyway. Most of the utility suites just slow your machine down.

NOD32 looks pretty interesting too!
Free? AVG
Skybot, which is free, and works just fine. It is the only virus protector that does not slow your computer down to a crawl, and I have tried all the paid for virus protectors.
I am a computer technician and will be going to school for computer engineering. Trust me on this one, I've used everything and the best antivirus as far as the overall picture goes is NOD32. You can find it here http://www.eset.com/. Good luck!
I think most people would say Norton.
All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free.
