I just got a dialog box saying there was a virus found, I'm assuming I want to abort the connection, but I'm not sure. A little help please?

does it say what is trying to connect?
Try rebooting in safemode (restart computer, press F8 over and over again while it is booting up until you see a menu for selecting how to boot up windows, select Safe Mode), and doing a scan and deleting whatever comes up then.
I was fixing a computer yesterday and the same thing was coming up on Avast. Unfortunately The file could not be deleted. But it did point me in the right direction. It was a Trojan hijacking the name server. Please give more info on Avast output. Google the Trojan name. Download Hijack This ( Great tool). Have you tried Adaware and Ewido.
