because antivirus consume lots of your computer memory (RAM) especially if your using norton or mcaffee antivirus, you should consider upgrading your RAM of simply change your antivirus to AVG (download it from www.grisoft.com "it consume less memory than other antivirus, and the best part is its FREE!!! it automatically updates your virus definition")

You don't download you run it! It's best you have no other program at the same time, still you don't need to watch it's progress, let it do it's job and do something else.
which antivrus are you using if its symantec or kaspersky there must be a scan running which slows down the computer
it will,your running a ant virus programme.
you need more ram or change the virus program you use
If u use norton, get rid of it and use avg(its Free). Norton just chugs along and uses up too much computer resourses causing your computer too run slow.
It takes up alot of memory in your computer escipaclly if your using Norton anivirus.
