BitDefender Antivirus IS THE BEST YOU CAN CHECK THAT
I have used most in the 20 years of being in IT. Currently AVG does it for me.
Kaspersky is the best for me.

Nod32 is both light weight (isn't expensive on computer resources) and is relatively cheap. It uses something called 'heuristics'. This means that it uses intelligence to make a 'best guess' in cases where it doesn't have a definition for the particular virus. Most AV software cannot detect/clean the virus unless it is told about it. And often, by the time the definition comes out, it's too late. So this is definately something you want.

A little harder to set up, but a free solution that is extremely powerful and will fully cover all your bases is called 'blink' from eEye. It's free if you live in the united states. This is a very powerful piece of software that is used as an enterprise solution. It is also light on system resources.
