If you forgot your Activation Key, then try to find the original box.

If you can't, don't worry, there are a few free antivirus solutions out there such as AVG Free. (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1)

Norton isn't the only AntiVirus out there.

I don't want it running everyday, it takes ages and really slows down my computer, but I've looked in the scheduler section and can only see an option to reschedule the update.

I can't seem to find the option anywhere, is it only with the paid for edition that you can do this?

Yes it is possible%26gt;doubleclick on icon in taskbar

and just above the icon you will see

scheduled tasks%26gt;click on that and the tasks box

will appear%26gt;highlight%26gt;test plan in basic mode and

click edit schedule and yet another box will appear

and thats the one you want.Uncheck!!!!!!!!!

The best way now is not to have a schedule scan,

but scan when going out or to bed and check the

box on L/H bottom corner to turn off computer

when finished.This is an exellent improvement.

Which anti-virus are we talking about here? You could very well have downloaded a virus in place of an anti-virus. Here are the free and SAFE anti-viruses that can be used:

If you installed a freeware anti-virus and it's NOT one of these, then it's most probably a rogue product. Immediately uninstall it, and get AVG or Avast! from above. Install and update it and then run a full system scan. Never use more than one anti-virus as it can cause driver conflicts.

It could be anything really. It has happened to me. It could be your computer's security settings, your internet settings and rarely is it another program already on your computer could be preventing the software from working probably.

you need to update norton constantly. yearly they require you to purchase their new program. download AVG its free and works just as good.

Sounds to me that your subscription is out of date, by about 2 years no less. I would drop norton immediately and find another security solution as soon as possible. If you are going to pay I would recommend NOD32, or get a free antivirus like AVG, Avast, or Antivir supplemented by a malware scanner. Regardless, your norton 2006, unless it is being updated, is little more use that no antivirus program at all.
The norton program subscription is valid for one year. It seems that your subcription has expired. I suggest that you purhcase Norton Internet security 2008 or Norton 360

I have always had my doubts about it and just recently installed on my wifes computer and it works soo smooth and is great.

How can it still be FREE?

This is because they accept donations. They do not charge for the service but in turn if you like their product and can even just spare a couple of bucks for their maintenance and upkeep they accept your donation. It's rather ingenious actually. Tons of people donating adds up quick. Especially when the software is so good.

whoever told you AVG was any good LIED the only reason it is free is because it is CRAP just wait till you get a nasty virus or trojan it wont get rid of then you'll see just how good it is
1) It's *not* that good. Avast and Avira are both much better.

2) They and other reputable companies give away less-functional free versions of their paid software as an enticement to buy the better product.

Because it is NOT very good. It virus detection rates are horrible.

Mostly noobs, the naive, the computer illiterate, and children use AVG Free. People of their ilk love AVG because they say it is easy to use and almost never bothers them with any pop-ups or warnings. Of course AVG Free never bothers them, it hardly ever finds any virus to warn them about!
AVG is excellent i I as a matter of fact had a Trojan horses 4 sources it found and destroyed (the free version). AVG is the best there is for free it also finds infected files. AVG can still be free because it makes enough sales through its anti-virus that you can buy, that shows how much people like it.

AVG from grisoft is free and many people like it.

Ad-aware is not an antivirus. It is anti-spyware. However it is a program you should have (or something that does the same job) anyway.
